Vaudeville: THEODORE KOSLOFF / Imperial Russian Ballet of Moscow 1916 Program

Description: This is a rare program (playbill) from the week of June 5th, 1916 for the vaudeville bill at the historic B.F. KEITH'S PALACE THEATRE in New York City ..... The Palace Theatre, located at 1564 Broadway (at 47th) in midtown-Manhattan opened March 24th, 1913 and until 1929, attained legendary status among vaudeville performers as the flagship of the monopolistic Keith-Albee organization, and the most desired booking in the country. To "Play the Palace" meant that an entertainer had reached the pinnacle of his vaudeville career. Performer Jack Haley wrote: Only a vaudevillian who has trod its stage can really tell you about it ... only a performer can describe the anxieties, the joys, the anticipation, and the exultation of a week's engagement at the Palace. The walk through the iron gate on 47th Street through the courtyard to the stage door, was the cum laude walk to a show business diploma. A feeling of ecstasy came with the knowledge that this was the Palace, the epitome of the more than 15,000 vaudeville theaters in America, and the realization that you have been selected to play it. Of all the thousands upon thousands of vaudeville performers in the business, you are there. This was a dream fulfilled; this was the pinnacle of variety success. (Wikipedia) ..... On the current bill was THEODORE KOSLOFF, Premier Danseur of the Imperial Ballet of Moscow and Petrograd. Mr. Kosloff was supported by VLASTA MASLOVA, VERA FREDOVA, M. LOBOIKO, LEOKADIA KLEMENTOWITCH, ANATOL BOURMAN and ALEXANDRE OVANOFF with violin soloist R. LIPSHUTZ and Coleman's Famous Russian Orchestra. Also on the bill were The MEYAKOS "A Surprise from the Mikadoland"; the CAITS BROTHERS, Humorous Dancers; JOSEPH E. BERNARD and Company present "Who Is She?", a Comedy Playlet by Willard Mack; BELLE STORY "The Young American Prima Sonna"; America's Greatest "Falstaff", THOMAS A. WISE in "The Christmas Letters" by Roy Atwell; MILT COLLINS "The Speaker of the House"; the FARBER GIRLS (Constance and Irene) Society's Dainty Entertainers and the European Equestrienne OLYMPIA DESVALL and Company and her Marvelous Horses and Dogs ..... DETAILS: The 36 page program measures 6" X 9" inches and includes beautiful cover graphics, production credits, list of entertainers, schedule of upcoming attractions and wonderful vintage advertising, but no photos or bios ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There is soiling and edge chipping to the front cover, a tear in the top edge of the back cover, slight discoloration to some inside pages and moderate edge wear. Despite these flaws, this rare playbill will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
