Description: USS PENNSYLVANIA BB-38 memorial first day cover for this famous battleship attacked at Pearl Harbor in 1941. Cover postmarked first day of issue on Jan 9, 2022 at Findlay, Ohio. Color painting of ship entering San Francisco Bay, printed on cachet #1842 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964 On December 7th, this battleship was in dry dock, and only lightly damaged by enemy aerial bombs. However, 15 crewmen were killed, 14 listed as missing and 38 wounded in this battle. She was released from her shipyard prison after the dry dock's caisson was flooded and opened. She sailed on 20 December to Puget Sound Shipyard for repairs, and went on to earn ten WW II Battle Stars in the Pacific Theater and a Navy Unit Citation. Cover franked with a 58 cent Flag stamp # 5657 (FDOI) and a 3 cent USN stamp from 1946 # 935. The ship was present in a 1937 USN ship parade on dedication day for the new Golden Gate Bridge.
