Description: USS MASSACHUSETTS BB-59 United States Navy Ship first day cover honoring this World War II Battleship. Cover postmarked at Quincy, MA on Oct 12, 1983. Cover with a color photo cachet #1579 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. Cover with a DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift! This 680 foot South Dakota Class battleship was commissioned May 12, 1942. Her first battle was off North Africa, where she destroyed the axis battleship Jean Bart's main battery in Casablanca Harbor and sank two destroyers. Sent to the Pacific Theater she earned ten more battle stars in most of the major South Pacific battles. This included pre-invasion fire during the Battle of Okinawa. This proud fighting battleship was decommissioned in 1947 and placed in the Norfolk Reserve Fleet until 1965, when she was enshrined at Fall River, Mass as the State's WW II Memorial. She continues to be open to the public at Battleship Cove. See the ship's web pages for the details of her design, construction, battles fought, post-war service and current activities. Cover franked with a 20 cent flag stamp. Seller has over 40 different battleship covers. Check out my other items! These items make fine USN gifts when mounted on a colored matte and placed in a 5x7 picture frame. Free US Shipping!
