Description: USS Massachusetts BB-59 South Dakota Class WW2 Battleship "Big Mamie" Art print of the USS Massachusetts BB-59 from an original painting on a Fall River harbor nautical chart by William B. MacGregor Jr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Battleship Massachusetts BB-59 was built in Quincy, Massachusetts at the Fore River Shipyard, commissioned May 1942 and decommissioned May 1947. The Massachusetts is the third of four South Dakota class battleships and the seventh ship to be named Massachusetts. During her service in WW2, she was soon fondly known by her crew as "Big Mamie". The Massachusetts was initially in North Africa and fired the first American 16" projectile in anger of World War II. Then, after a refit in 1943 spent the balance of WW2 in the Pacific with her 16" guns pounded the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Truk, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. By July she was off Japan with the Third Fleet. Battleship Massachusetts stands out because she fired the first and last American 16" projectile of WW2. With peace achieved, "Big Mamie" returned to the United States and operated with the Pacific Fleet until mid-1946. Currently, with the assistance of Massachusetts school children, they raised enough money to bring Big Mamie to Fall River in 1965. Now the centerpiece of Fall River's revitalized waterfront "Big Mamie" has been welcoming visitors for more than a quarter century. · Nautical chart art print of the World War battleship USS Massachusetts with her 16” guns blazing.· Nautical Chart Background- Fall River. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May, 2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA
