Description: Hi, Take a look at this very nice Zeppelin porcelain miniature that will fit right into your collection. Item-One 2-1/2" vintage USS Los Angeles ZRIII porcelain Zeppelin made in Germany in the early 1920s. My Ref # Main Box PZRIII Quick Facts! This will be a new addition to some of my listings. I hope you enjoy them. You can skip this section if you wish. What does the "LZ" mean in Zeppelins? Luftschiff Zeppelin or Airship ZeppelinWhat does the ZR mean? Zeppelin Rigid.Last- Who actually names the airships in the US?The Secretary of the Navy under the Direction of the President. In this case, the USS Los Angeles, was named by the First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Grace Anna Goodhue Coolidge. As you can see, the power given to the Secretary of the Navy at the time, Edwin Denby, really didn't mean very much!!! He could've named it anything he liked, as long as it rhymed with "Los Angeles"!!! We all knew who was running the country at the time. Afterall, First Lady Coolidge was awarded a gold medal from the National Institute of Social Sciences for her "Fine Personal Influence as First Lady of the Land". In 1931, she was voted one of the top twelve greatest living women. Ok, back to the item! Description/History-I have one of the nicest German made porcelain's Zeppelins that you will find anywhere. There are two more of these for sale on eBay at the time this listing was posted. One is at $180.00 and the other $199.99. They can be simply found by typing "ZRIII Los Angeles 8877" into the eBay search bar.The ZRIII was built in Friedrichshafen, Germany between 1923-1924. It was built for the U.S. Navy as part as reparations for WWI. This was a huge event for Germany and the world and was celebrated by all as the world was moving on from the horrors of WWI. All types of souvenirs were being made and the ones from Germany were especially sought after. The ZRIII was christened the USS Los Angeles on November 25, 1924. It was the most successful airship of the US Navy and sadly was dismantled in 1939. This porcelain Zeppelin was probably made sometime in 1924 as the name, the USS Los Angeles, was not originally chosen until after the construction began in 1923. There are only a few known examples around. The ones I did find around are not even close to being as nice as this one. As I mentioned, there are two for sale on eBay now. I want you to go and look at the photos. The cheaper one has some chips, stains and speckling. The second one looks better but the seller says there are no cracks. Look closely at the 8th photo. You be the judge. Is mine perfect? No, it isn't but it is by far the best out of the lot. There are no visible chips or clumps of visible black speckling. Is this to say it is perfect? No, but it is the nicest out of the others I mentioned. Look at the photos and the only thing you can see is a small rough spot next to the letter "Y" in "Germany". This looks as if the ceramist or potter's tool left a mark before it was placed into a kiln. It's almost impossible to see and it would be on the opposite side of the way you would display this. I only found it after a very close examination. I disclose everything I know so you won't be surprised. This porcelain is as it was when it left the shop. Onto the markings. The "Los Angeles ZRIII" on the portside is obvious to what that means. The "Germany" on the starboard side indicates where it was made. The two square shaped stands below it have gilding and what looks like to be windows on the display side. The starboard side has markings on the rear stand. The numbers "8877" can be clearly seen. I couldn't find out much information on those numbers and if anyone who reads this does, please drop me a line. I really spent over an hour scouring the internet and looked at older off eBay auctions and no information was revealed. This very nice porcelain airship will be delivered to you protected inside a small jewelry box wrapped in a small piece of the red felt you see in the photos. That is not just some ordinary felt. It is made of real wool and not the cheap polyester found in hobby and craft stores today. I purchase a few small pieces of felt from a woman who hand dyes vintage 100% real wool felt. I was very lucky to get some dyed in red. Please don't discard it after you get it!!! Shipping-I do not try to profit on shipping.
