USMC Summer Fire Resistant Flying Coveralls Flight Suit CS/FRP-1

Description: An excellent pair of Coveralls flying summer fire resistant polyamide Type CS/FRP-1. Designed to replace the cotton-twill coveralls, the Navy’s CS/FRP-1 flight suit was made from permanently fire resistant polyamide (Nomex). First issued to Marine Corps pilots in Vietnam in 1967. This pair belonged to USMC Lieutenant Colonel John Julius Metzko. LtCol Metzko began his US Marine Corps service in August 1952 as a second lieutenant, then later as a Captain was a finalist in NASA pilot astronaut program for the first Apollo mission. Later he served as a Major and executive officer of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 531 (VMFA) April 1965, the first Marine F4Bs in Vietnam and as their executive officer led them on first Marine combat close air support mission since the Korean War. He returned to Vietnam as the Commander of Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 225 (VMA [AW]-225) flying A-6 Intruders from January to June 1970. He would retire as the head of the Air Weapons System Branch, successfully advocated the use of the first vertical/short takeoff landing jet aircraft Harrier AV-8A. Lieutenant Colonel Metzko died in 2020.
