Description: Very unusual post war 1950's European tanker helmet in Blue. Color is dark blue from the factory and has blue leather accents on the ear flaps and straps are light blue. I think this may be a custom one off or prototype for evaluation. It is the same as the following type: I was told this was a one off for police evaluation for riot control but can not verify that. U.S. Army-Europe Tankman's Helmet West German M-38 Style Tank Crew Helmet- U.S. Army-Europe Tankman's Helmet This United States Army-Europe tankman's helmet was based on a West German design (based on the American Model 1938 tankman's helmet ) that the Bundeswehr rejected. American armored units, however, widely used the helmet in Europe during the 1950s and 1960s. These helmets were purchased locally by individual units due to shortages of vehicle crew helmets within the U.S. Army. This was also after WWII and this was also an attempt to help jump start Germany's economy. Country: Germany War Period: Post-World War II to Korea Garment Type. Given the fact these were purchased by individuals it appears to be a custom order, there were glued on ear pads inside removed for some reason but the leather inside looks brand new. It is marked size 56 and under the leather flaps is the letters LE so I have no idea what branch of service this was for due to the color. I think this was manufactured in Germany but could not find any further data and no reference to it in blue which is its original color. One snap is missing. Very interesting variation and might be a one off prototype not adopted for service. Please see photos and ask any and all questions prior to bidding as this is an as is no return item.
