Johnson Printing, (undated, ca. 1965?) Description: Laminated paper sheet, measuring about 16" x 11.25", including thin lamination border. A trifle toned, but in fine condition. The placemat fueatures a handsome photographic portrait of Rev. E. L. Rogers, who had been Pastor for a few years at the time, but would go on to serve in the position for nearly five decades. Some contact details for the church are present, along with two photographs of the interior of the church building. Most striking, however, is a photograph of Rev. Rogers sitting next to Dr. Martin Luther King; an almost candid snapshot, which captures both of the men talking. It's not immediately clear when the photo was taken, as Dr. King made several trips to Cleveland during the period when Rogers was Pastor, but it likely dates to the early-mid-1960s. The placemat also probably dates from this period, due to the presence of all-numerical phone numbers. A great piece of Cleveland ephemera, which brings together the strong tradition of African-American church culture and one of humanity's great heroes.
