Description: Hardbound 1959 edition of The Year Book and Guide to East Africa, edited by A Gordon-Brown for the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company, Ltd. This book measures 7¼" x 5" and has 342 pages, plus 16 map plates, printed in color on heavy paper. There are 33 additional pages of front matter and 64 pages of advertisements at the rear. The book was printed in England Waterlow & Sons for Robert Hale, Ltd., London. There's a large fold-out trip-panning map of East Africa tucked in the front pocket. This map was prepared by the Shell Oil Company "to assist tourists to organize their travels in East African territories as a whole." Condition: The Shell map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no marks or writing. The book itself is sound and clean, with a firm binding and no rips or tears. There are a few neat rubber-stamp imprints from Armed Forces Radio Taiwan, San Francisco; the covers and spine show some scattered scuffs; and a folding map of Africa, called for in the table of contents is not present. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. The atlas section includes maps of Tanganyika, Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Nyasaland, Abyssinia, and the Sudan. Cartography is by John Bartholomew & Son, Ltd., Edinburgh. The Union-Castle Line was a British shipping line that operated a fleet of passenger liners and cargo ships between Europe and Africa.
