Found live by Phillip Clover in 35 feet of water under rubble, Makua, Oahu, Hawaii, 1971. Makua is an uninhabited area close to Kaena Point, a favorite area with fishermen and divers because it is a vast stretch of diving/fishing paradise. It is isolated and tough to get to, so it is the perfect spot for such things, which of course is the up side of making the laborious trip there... it also is just above the area that Tony Wells used to go diving at, so it appears that this area was once a shell collecting paradise for rashleighanas and other rare cowries. . Phillip w, Clover was a world-renown collector, shell dealer, author and shell authority. And though his home was Glen Ellen California, I don't think he spent much time there, since he loved hunting for rare shells all over the world. A frequent visitor to Hawaii, his name showed up often in the Hawaiian Shells News, either under Recent Finds, or when he'd send in an article for the club to publish. And I don't remember if this was him or not, but there was a story in the Hawaiian Shell News about someone buying a rare valentia cowrie for almost nothing while wandering the shell stalls in the Philippines, and by coincidence, there is listed in Phillip's biography a story he wrote about buying a valentia for $20. The valentia (ultra-rare before 1960) was sitting in a basket of tiger cowries for sale. . True story. . So Phillip Clover, like Andy Butler, Tom Richards, Stu Lillico, and several others of a very select group of divers, collected quite a few rashleighanas, the lucky rats.... And as the photos show, this little mature beauty with absolutely gorgeous color, is a terrific, ultra-rare live collected GEM that would look fantastic sitting on your shelf!
