They were introduced to the market just one year after Acushnet (Titleist) purchased Golfcraft in 1969 to get into the space. If you are not familiar with the Golfcraft Company, it produced top-of-the-line forged clubs under a number of brands dating back to the 1940s.In fact, in 1966, three years before Acushnet purchased it, the Wall Street Journal called Golfcraft the largest golf club manufacturing company in the world. Beyond its own brands, it sold blank heads to some other manufacturers to do final finishing and shaping. If you have read other articles in this series, you might remember that back in 1961, a man named Karsten Solheim bought some blank Golfcraft heads and milled the backs out to produces the very first cavity back iron: the Ping Ballnamic ’69 (reference: Greatest Ben Hogan Irons of all Time). The purchase of Golfcraft made Acushnet an instant player in the category to complement its already strong position in the ball market. Titleist Limited Edition Forged 681 irons are targeted to satisfy those serious players loyal to the traditional looks and feel of a forged blade. The 681's feature a classic muscle back design, minimum constant offset, and an improved profile. They were used to win eight PGA Tour events in 2000, including three major championships. Compared to Titleist forgings of the past, the 681 is slightly higher in the heel and features a fuller toe. The short irons have been improved by deepening the heel and slightly reducing the toe, providing a square appearance. The stock Dynamic Gold shaft features the proprietary Titleist Nuetralizer, an oil tempered hickory wood dowel for enhanced feel and hosel strength. Review: "I just started playing these this fall, and I don't think I will ever let them go. Just a sweet feel, zero offset, and fantastic D3 swing weight. So I've read that there were only 2500 of these forged, and they are to to specs that Tiger used with Titleist. Not that I care about what tiger used, but these irons create confidence. Like everyone else says, shotmaking is easy due to trajectory control and great spin on the greens. I would enjoy the chance to compare the 681 and my 681 "T". I have read all over the place that nearly all Titleist lovers think the 681 line is the all time best."This vintage club is in playable condition, there are minimal scratches, no missing chrome, and minimal dings to speak of (see pictures), has playable grip, great looking shaft, as well as almost no groove wear. This iron will be a great replacement for play, use as a driving iron, or as collectable for many years.Titleist 681 Forged Blade 3 Iron, Single Club - 2001-2002True Temper Dynamic Gold R300 Steel shaft in excellent conditionGolf Pride Tour Velvet Style Grip is playableGrooves are sharp, clean, and deep Bid with confidence (100% positive feedback)Fast shipping Prices are based on SINGLE 3 Iron.
