TULLIMONSTRUM GREGARIUM-TULLY MONSTER FOSSIL MAZON CREEK UNIQUE LG HEAD PARTIAL

Description: TULLIMONSTRUM GREGARIUM-TULLY MONSTER FOSSIL MAZON CREEK UNIQUE LARGE HEAD PARTIAL Listed is an unusual example of Tullimonstrum gregarium partial with features not commonly found with most specimens. This is an adult specimen partial including The positive side of the concretion. The specimen has excellent detail, particularly the skin texture and smooth curved 3D presentation of the head and proboscis, with a significant portion of the proboscis present, including the cephalic crescent, and demonstrates other 3D attributes including the eye stalks. The Tully "head" has a beautiful pink brown coloration with significant parts of the proboscis and head visible that contrasts well with the darker red/brown matrix. Complete Tullys are rarely found, so this a good partial representing significant body parts in an aesthetic fashion. I have and will be listing other interesting Tully partials and interesting Mazon Creek specimens, so check them out! Tullimonstrum information: Tullimonstrum gregarium, known as theTully monster, is an extinct genus of soft-bodied bilitarian animal that lived in shallow tropical coastal waters of muddy estuaries during the Pennsylvania geological, about 300 million years ago. Only a single species, T. gregarium, is known. Examples of Tullimonstrum have been found only in the Essex biota, a smaller section of the Mazon Creek fossil beds of Illinois, United States. Classification has been the subject of controversy, and interpretations of the fossil have likened it to mollusks, arthropods, conodonts, worms, tunicates, and vertebrates, although recent research has indicated that it is likely an invertebrate. This creature had a mostlycigarshaped body, with a triangular tailfin, two longstalked eyes, and aproboscistipped with a mouth-like appendage. Based on the fossils, it seems this creature was anektoniccarnivore that hunted in the oceanswater column. WhenTullimonstrumwas alive, Illinois was a mixture of ecosystems like muddy estuaries, marine environments, and rivers and lakes. Tullimonstrumprobably reached lengths of up to 35 centimetres (14in); the smallest individuals are about 8cm (3.1in) long. Tullimonstrumhad a pair of vertical, ventral fins (though the fidelity of preservation of fossils of its soft body makes this difficult to determine) situated at the tail end of its body, and typically featured a longprobosciswith up to eight small sharpteethon each "jaw", with which it may have actively probed for small creatures and edibledetritusin the muddy bottom. It was part of the ecological community represented in the unusually rich group ofsoft-bodied organismsfound among the assemblage called theMazon Creek fossilsfrom their site inGrundy County and Kankakee County, Illinois, and most these specimens were likely found from coal strip mine Pit 11.
