Description: Here we have a beautiful limited edition series from ambient-industrial duo TROUM: Tjukurrpa, German import CDs issued as three separate volumes in 2001 and 2003 on the Transgredient label, now out of print. Troum is a duo who reside in Bremen, Germany, established in early 1997. The two members Glit[S]ch and Baraka[H] were originally active in the experimental group Maeror Tri. Tjukurrpa, which translates as "dreamtime," is a trilogy of releases, intended to put the listener into a dreamlike state of unconscious exploration. Each CD takes a different approach toward achieving this objective: Part One concentrates on "harmonies," Part Two on "drones," and Part Three on "rhythms and pulsations." Each disc features over an hour of material. The pieces on Part One are comprised entirely of guitar, bass, accordion and voices. Part Two is made up of loops based on metal sounds, percussion & other more obscure sources, as well as mouth-organ, choirs, guitars, and effects. These first two volumes are heavy ambient in the vein of James Plotkin, Stars of the Lid and Zoviet France. Part Three takes a different tack, consisting of loops and hand-played percussion, along with electric guitar, bass, balalaika, mouth organ, voices and flute. (It should be emphasized that no samplers, synths or computers were used to create any of this music.) Each CD is beautifully packaged in a full-colour circle-cover. That said, since the individual discs are basically housed between two round pieces of paper, some scuffing is inevitable. In this case, Part One and Part Three are in very good shape. Part Two is lightly scuffed, but plays flawlessly.
