Description: Navajo weaving, ca. 1895-1900. Transitional period -- stylized Second Phase Chief's blanket design. Homespun yarn: Red is aniline dyed. Dark brown and grey are natural wool colors. Size: 6'2" x 4'7". Condition is considered excellent despite what appears to be flaws (see detail photos with the pencil). Weave is characteristic of the Transitional Time Period, heavier yarn but woven tightly. The term Transitional refers to the transition from blanket to rug. The blanket designs were often used or adapted in a stylized manner; the size and weight of the pieces however took on more rug-like appearance. This item has the 'Second Phase' characteristic of horizontal stripes broken by diamond and stacked diamond designs also running horizontally. It is very strong and striking and an excellent example of the Transition Chief pieces. It was purchased from Streets of Taos in 1986. Feel free to ask questions about this piece. I check notifications from eBay often and will respond quickly to your inquiries. Thanks for stopping by my shop.
