NEARLY four years ago, and when in charge of the car department of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids it Northern Railway, the NATIONAL CAR AND LOCOMOTIVE BUILDER induced me to write a series of articles on the construction of railway cars. The intention at that early date was to publish these articles in book form when concluded. Having no literary training, I engaged in the enterprise much against my own inclination, and am still convinced that this work should have been assigned to more able and experienced hands. I trust, however, that such as it is it will in some measure fill a long-felt want. We have books on all conceivable subjects, but absolutely nothing, excepting the reports and dictionary of the Master Car-Builders' Association, on the subject tinder consideration. In treating the subject it was found impossible to do it justice by illustrating and describing a series of complete cars, and I therefore decided to handle it in detail. No new theories have been advanced, and whoever looks for an ideal car in the following pages will be somewhat disappointed; it has simply been attempted to present some of the leading methods of construction, and only where these are unmistakably faulty have they been criticized. In preparing the matter but very few drawings were obtainable that were suitable without being altered; nearly all the cuts were therefore made from original sketches. In preparing these, however, the Master Car-Builders' Association reports and dictionary, as well as various published drawings, were freely consulted. In addition to the book proper it was thought advisable to present in an appendix a number of complete cars. The illustrations of these are exact copies of working drawings, which were for this purpose contributed by the railway and car companies thus represented. DAYTON, 0., June 1, 1892.
