The Norwood offered here was brought out by Towle in 1884. It is an ornate pattern with a crest motif on the top of the handle. The sauce ladle has the retailer seller's name on the back of the handle: John Bessmer. This was a common habit at the time when large orders would be stamped at the factory with the name of the company who would sell the product. The sauce ladle is a piece which seems no longer to be made. It is a very handy item, about one half or less the size of a gravy ladle. Its purpose is to serve a sauce such as a cheese for vegetables or a dessert topping or a dressing for salad or a salsa or a reduced liquid. Generally, the food must be liquid enough to flow. The small ladle has many uses and a four course meal can easily call for three or four of them. The old ones vary a little in size, and are frequently very decorative. The sauce ladle offered here measures about 6". This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 140 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss. The bowl has a French grey finish.
