STERLING SILVER DUAL PEN STAND CONTAINING AN ENGRAVED INSCRIPTION FROM PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY, “FOR LEE, FROM JACK, MARCH 3RD, 1963,” AND AN ENGRAVED PRESIDENTIAL SEAL On March 3, 1963, President Kennedy and architect John Carl Warnecke made a surprise visit to Arlington National Cemetery and took a tour of the Custis-Lee Mansion. Kennedy remarked on the view of the capital from the mansion that he, “could stay here forever.” Following his assassination and state funeral eight months later, Jacqueline Kennedy decided to bury Kennedy on the hillside just below the Custis-Lee Mansion, the same view Kennedy had marveled on, and Warnecke designed Kennedy’s Eternal Flame memorial gravesite. MARCH 3, 1963 MARKED JOHN F. KENNEDY’S FINAL VISIT TO THE CUSTIS-LEE MANSION AT ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY, WHICH ULTIMATELY BECAME HIS FINAL RESTING PLACE President Kennedy presented the pen stand to someone of significance that was on this famous tour, either in his party or a part of the tour guide, and inscribed it to memorialize Confederate General Robert E. Lee whose main residence was the Custis-Lee Mansion. PRESIDENT KENNEDY MEMORIALIZES CONFEDERATE GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE WITHIN THE ENGRAVED INSCRIPTION AFTER VISITING HIS MAIN RESIDENCE Stamped on the top side by Tiffany, contains a velvet bottom, measures 9 by 5 by 0.875 inches, in very fine condition with light scratching and scuffing, and pens each measure 8 inches in length. Two similar items, including a Tiffany & Co. sterling silver bowl and cigarette case both presented by Kennedy, sold for €26,650 at Sotheby’s in December 2007 and $52,500 at Heritage Auctions in May 2016.
