Description: Both volumes of the monumental 1856 autobiographical Thirty Years in the US Senate, by Thomas H. Benton, who served from 1820 to 1850. Published in two large hardcover volumes in 1856 by D. Appleton. These both are in excellent condition. There is a little wear on the covers: on volume 1 there is some spotting on the back and a little tear on the left side of the front cover, at the spine fold. Also slight fading on the spine, but fully readable. On volume 2 there is a small rip at the top of the spine (see photo) and a little fading on the back. Both have slight corner wear but very slight. Both are fully and beautifully intact, with straight boards, strong binding, no missing, loose, or torn pages, and no marks or damage to the interiors. A name on the opening blank page and some darkening and spotting where the tissue pages were protecting the engraving opposite the title pages (see photos). Otherwise these are both in excellent condition, very nice copies, and a surprisingly readable account of early American political issues. Beautiful.
