Description: Publisher's Note In the fall of 1953, Random House inaugurated the series of which this is the second volume. Then it was our intention, as it is now, to develop this theatre annual into a hardy perennial. This second harvest, Theatre ’54, under the editorship of John Chapman, drama critic of the New York Daily News, again offers an appraisal of the past season’s accomplishments in New York and all over the United States. For good measure, there has been added a new section which surveys the year’s offerings on the London Stage. The twelve best plays of a notable season—the Golden Dozen—are presented in authorized reading versions. A glance at the Table of Contents should convey what a wealth and variety of fare is served in these pages. In the first volume of the series, Barrett H. Clark, the drama critic and historian, contributed a comprehensive account of the work of the playwrights and actors in the cities, towns and hamlets out of reach of Broadway. Mr. Clark, to our deep regret, died just before Theatre ’53 was published. Fortunately, we have found an excellent replacement: George Freedley, Curator of the Theatre Collection of the New York Public Library. The essay on the activities of the London stage is from the pen of a gentleman who speaks with authority on the theatre and in the altar. He is C. B. Mortlock, prolific writer on the drama and Canon of Chichester Cathedral. As planned and carried out in the initial volume, there are sections devoted to the year’s awards and prizes, records of the time, place, cast, length of run and significant facts about dramatists, players and producers. Books on the theatre are listed and the passing of distinguished figures in the theatre is recorded. A full index of plays, with the names of the people who contributed to their writing, direction, staging and acting, provides an indispensable file for constant reference. For many years Random House has been without a rival in the publication of plays. This record reflects my own and my colleagues’ devotion to the theatre. Theatre ’54 and all the volumes in the years to come, under the same title but with a change of numerals, are additional manifestations of the pride we take in our contribution to the literature of the theatre. ~ Bennet Cerf, New York, June 1954 Publishing Info Edited by John Chapman.
