The UK publication coincides with the opening of the exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in July 2001. The city of Baltimore boasts some of the most impressive collections of 19th- and early 20th-century French art to be found in the United States. Together, its two premier art institutions—The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Gallery—-house a collection which charts the development of French painting from early 19th-century Neoclassicism to early 20th-century Post-Impressionism, which heralded the onset of Cubism and other modern art movements. This collaborative exhibition presents the finest examples of French art from both institutions and covers every major artistic movement and school of the 19th century. Neoclassicism, as exemplified by Ingres' Oedipus and the Sphinx, with its emphasis on delineated forms and reliance on ancient sources, remained a dominant force in French painting throughout the 19th century. The significance of landscape painting in 19th-century French art is seen in the works of a number of painters featured in this exhibition. Among them was Gustave Courbet, whose Shaded Stream at Le Puits Noir is rendered in a highly naturalistic manner. The impressionist era is heralded in an early landscape by its chief exponent, Claude Monet. His Windmills Near Zaandam reflects the artist's early fascination with effects of light, the essential characteristic of his œuvre. The varied range of artistic activity in the early decades of the 20th century is highlighted in several key paintings, most notably Pierre Bonnard's Woman with Basket of Fruit, Picasso's Mother and Child and Matisse's Purple Robe and Anemones. Sona K. Johnston is Curator of Painting and Sculpture Before 1900 at The Baltimore Museum of Art. She has organized exhibitions on the art of Antoine-Louis Barye, Honoré Daumier, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Benjamin West and others. Her writings include numerous exhibition and collection catalogues. At present, she is preparing a catalogue raisonné of the work of the American impressionist Theodore Robinson. She has just published Faces of Impressionism: Portraits from American Collections (Rizzoli, 1999). For thirty-three years, William R. Johnston has been employed at The Walters, where he is Associate Director and Curator of Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Art. He has written on both fine and decorative arts. In 1997, he coauthored The Walters Gallery (Scala Books), and, in 1999, he completed the first history of the Walters Art Gallery, William and Henry Walters: The Reticent Collectors (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999).” The Triumph of French Painting 2000 The Baltimore Museum of Art Softcover Condition: Acceptable.
