THE SUBJECT WAS CHILDREN: THE ART OF JESSIE WILCOX SMITH (1980, SC)-GOOD

Description: A study of the work of Jessie Willcox Smith, the most popular and successful woman illustrator of her time, examines and reproduces many of her paintings of children which appeared in children's books and on the cover of Good Housekeeping magazine "... I came into my own, and ever since it has been one long joyous road along which troop delightful children-happy children, sad children, thoughtful children, and above all wondering, imaginative children... I love to paint them all." This quotation is taken from an autobiographical sketch (reprinted in this book) written by Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935), probably the most popular and successful woman illustrator of her time. Delightful as the work of her contemporaries was, it seldom attained the perfection and versatility that was to be seen in Jessie Smith's illustrations of children and fairy tales. A barometer of her success is the fact that for over fifteen years her paintings appeared on the cover of every issue of Good Housekeeping magazine as well as being published in many books of children's stories. There is a universal element in her pictures, and she seems to be offering a new and romantic visualization of child life. It's as if she were appealing to all adults who have forgotten the joys of childhood. The Subject Was Children reproduces for all to enjoy sixty-eight of the finest paintings by this great illustrator. ABOUT US: We are a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
