The crew settles with them and learns their culture and language and introduces them to farming. Later the crew encounters the Jana'ata, the people who sent the signals and carnivores, living in cities. The crew learns that the Runa people are the prey of the Jana'ata people. The crew feels guilty for teaching the Runa to grow their food, because this only led to expanding the population and more deaths as the prey. Sandoz becomes involved in the Jana'ata culture, leading to shocking events from cultural differences. The book received the Arthur C.
