The 8 x 10-¾ inch, 102 page hardcover book covers the major events of the Dakota War of 1862, from the beginning with the killing of five settlers on 17 August 1862 to the tragic end with the hanging of 36 Sioux at Mankato on 26 December 1862. It is in very nice, little-used condition but the original orange and brown dust jacket shows wear and has been taped along the top edge. On the front fly leaf there are two names, John Brandes and Art LaCroix. Brandes was a very well-known Catholic priest in Minneapolis / St. Paul, Minnesota who first owned the book, and then it was owned by Art LaCroix, a World War II Battle of the Bulge veteran and the mayor of Rapid City, South Dakota from 1975 -1987.
