Description: THE SILVER INKWELL by Phyllis A. Whitney / Illustrated by Hilda Frommholz Hardcover, no dustjacket. Copyright 1945 ~ Probable unstated First Edition with no additional printings referenced and the copyright date repeated on the Title Page. 272 pages. ABOUT THE BOOK: The silver inkwell on Lynn Sheridan's desk was an acute reminder that she meant to be an author. Convinced that her work in a library gave no material for stories, she accepted a job in the children's book department of a publishing house. Here Lynn met Cleo Barkridge, an author whom she wanted to glamorize in a story, and worked with Bryce Hunter, who criticized her attitude toward writing and living with equal ferocity. Lynn was reluctant when Cleo pulled her, as well as Bryce, into a neighborhood plan to help neglected children, as time for writing was precious. Moreover, worry about her sister Patty's strange friendship with Mike Barotti, local tough guy, seemed to crowd plot ideas out of her mind. Little by little, as she grew to understand the children and helped keep Mike's brother Tommy out of jail, she began to see the justice of Bryce's criticism. But it took his narrow escape from death to give Lynn a true-to-life plot for a story. CONDITION NOTES: Hardcover with light general wear. Appears to be free of writing or markings. Small circular abrasion on first interior page opposite the pastedown. Mild toning to page edges visible when book is closed. Interior is bright with a hint of toning, solid, crisp, and clean. A block of pages at the rear of the book, from 261 to 268, have tears at outer margins ~ it appears these pages were not properly cut at the time of publication and they have been torn open, rather than cut, at the edges ~ the chips and tears are all in the margin area with no impact on the text.
