Description: "The Secret Birds" by Tony Fitzpatrick, foreword by Helen MacDonald. 2016 Curbside Splendor Publishing, Chicago. Stated First Edition, apparent first printing (no disconfirming printing detail provided on copyright page). ISBN 9781940430768. 100 pages, with color photos of the artist's collages on more than half the pages. Hardcover, no dust jacket (as issued?). Original price (on UPC): $49.95. The artist and author, Tony Fitzpatrick, has signed, inscribed, and dated this book on the title page. The inscription reads simply: "Dec 16, 2016 / For Dick -- / Tony Fitzpatrick". The author used a thick black marker. The book begins with a foreword by Helen MacDonald, author of "H is for Hawk", followed by a Wallace Stevens poem regarding blackbirds. The artist provides a number of short essays and poems in a section he called "Twelve or so thoughts I had while drawing birds" on wide ranging topics. This 20+ pages of text are followed by more than 50 pages of color images of Fitzpatrick's collages, one per page. Stunningly beautiful work by a famous Chicago artist / personality. Personal favorite is "Cock Robin", which features the logo of a defunct Chicago-area ice cream and hamburger restaurant chain founded in (nearby to me) Naperville, Illinois. The collages feature many details that make perusing them interesting. Photos are of the actual book on offer. See the photos for additional insight into content and condition of this collage picture (and essay) book SIGNED by Tony Fitzpatrick.
