Description: Played once to transfer to computer play list -- plastic jewel case show wear of long life on attic shelf, but disc and liner notes are MINT.A CD COPY OFTHE SCARLET PIMPERNELa revival recording of the musical by Frank Wildhornstarring Douglas Sills, Rachel York, Rex Smith, et alAfter a "concept" CD and then an original cast album, this is the third recording of Frank Wildhorn's The Scarlet Pimpernel. What basically happened was that the show was faltering on Broadway, but a couple of deep-pocketed producers saw it, loved it, and decided to finance a revised version with a new director and new cast members (Rachel York replacing Christine Andreas and Rex Smith replacing Terrence Mann). This Encore CD mixes recordings by both casts and adds two bonus tracks (by Peabo Bryson and Wildhorn powerhouse Linda Eder) from the concept recording. The protracted history here may be as hard to follow as the show's plot, but then Pimpernel has always been about more than mere narrative subtleties. It's about bombast, showmanship, in-your-face theatrics, and a couple of power ballads. And it's all on this recording. As I sit here listening to Rex Smith sing "Where's the Girl?" I'm having a hard time coming up with something to write for this review because the music is so beautiful that it is distracting me. I've been listening to my Encore cd nonstop since I bought it and it's starting to get worn out... that's how much I listen to it. I'm going to have to buy a new cd. Personally, for "Where's the Girl?" I liked Terrance Mann better but for every other Chau-Chau part I like Rex Smith. Now... the new Marguerite is fabulous... really she is. She gives so much to the song "Storybook". Of course we all know that Douglas Sills is awesome. Do I really have to say anything? He has an amazing voice and it's so cool how he can change from serious at one moment to completely foppish the next. Basically... everything on this cd gives me goosebumps. I recommend you listen to "Where's the Girl" (reprise also) and "She Was There" on repeat... maybe even add in "Prayer". If you are looking for some bedtime music then I would say those songs plus "When I look at You" (reprise also) and "Marguerite's Dilemma" For fun just put the whole cd on repeat and veg out. This is the most current soundtrack for the current showing of the Scarlet Pimpernel. It is a great recording and the reboot of the musical is much improved over the original version of the musical. I highly recommend it.
