Description: The Rumbling Volcano : Islamic Fundamentalism in Egypt - Nabeel T. Jabbour - Mandate Press 1993 Edition - LIKE NEW CONDITION! 5.5 x 0.72 x 8.5 inches, 304 Pages, Pictorial Wraps, Perfect Bound Trade Paperback, Mandate Press 1993 Edition, Like New / Near Mint Condition Jabbour's book begins with an inside look at the history and current manifestations of Islamic Fundamentalism in the nation of Egypt. After understanding the events and leaders that have lead Fundamentalism to develop as it has in present day, Jabbour then opens the book to considering the factors influencing many youth towards Islamic Fundamentalism. Finally, the book is finished by considering future prospects of this movement and suggesting several changes that are necessary to provide young Egyptians with a better option than Fundamentalism. Jabbour's book is successful at providing as objective of perspective as possible on the issues at hand. Rather than criticizing or condemning, the book offers a fresh view on the historical factors, as well as the present conditions that have led to the attractiveness of Islamic Fundamentalism in Egypt. Though specifically focusing on Islamic Fundamentalism in Egypt, the overall concepts are valuable to gain broader insight into the thoughts and understanding of such Fundamentalists. Readers are given inside "access," otherwise impossible to receive without years of living in the context. This knowledge leads to a greater understanding and compassion for those who are drawn to such extremes, while not condoning the extremist actions. The book wets reader's appetites for even more information on the current situation. Since being published in 1993, much has drawn international media attention to the issue of Islamic Fundamentalism, unfortunately often with a basis in fear. Jabbour's book provides several lessons to be learned. First, the notion of examining Islamic Fundamentalism through the lenses of "disciplined wonder" (Jabbour 1993, 7) is a skill that many would benefit from in a world of sensationalized media stories. Those who are able to look objectively (or as objectively as humanly possible) into a situation can gain not only a better understanding of the issues involved, but also develop a deeper compassion for other humans, even if they do not agree with their actions. Jabbour sets a good example of this in his book. Next, Jabbour gives good insight on the Israel-Palestine conflict and its relation to the Islamic Fundamentalism movement. While one might initially consider these two topics as unrelated, Jabbour makes a strong argument for the interconnectedness of these issues. Westerners would be wise to listen humbly to the injustices caused by an unbounded alliance with Israel and take seriously the impact these injustices have on those in the Muslim world. Finally, Part Four of the book, entitled "Factors Contributing to the Development of Fundamentalism," paints the picture of political, religious, economic, social, and psychological factors in everyday life that lead many to the hope and power that Islamic Fundamentalism offers. Readers must take seriously the challenges presented, learning compassion for those who live in such circumstances and seeking to bring hope and justice where there is not. If we do not learn to offer a better option than Islamic Fundamentalism, the numbers of youth who continue to lean in that direction will only continue to rise. This book has challenged me to engage with a topic I might otherwise quickly dismiss as "not directly connected to my life" or as "a hopeless situation". It challenges the desire to write Fundamentalists off as "crazy" and begs the question of what role we, as Christians, have in bringing Kingdom hope into the lives of so many hopeless people. How would Christ respond to a young man or women on the path of becoming a Fundamentalist? What hope would He offer? What injustices would He choose to see and not overlook? I think of the "silent majority" referenced in the book (Jabbour 1993, 164) and wonder how this group might be reached before Islamic Fundamentalism becomes their only option of hope. Are Christians willing to work alongside Muslims to offer alternatives of peace and hope? What will it take to give those who suffer a better option? ---from Reviews 2014 Condition is "Like New".
