One evening, while committing a burglary in the luxurious home of Walter Sullivan, an influential Washington philanthropist, he witnesses, hidden in a strong room with a one-way mirror, the lovemaking of Christy, Sullivan's wife, and a man who happens to be President of the United States Alan Richmond, of whom Sullivan is a friend and also a financial supporter. But, under the petrified gaze of Luther, the situation degenerates when Richmond is violent towards Christy, who to protect herself, grabs a letter opener and wounds him in the arm before being shot dead by Colin and Burton , two agents of the president's close security. Gloria Russell, advisor to the president also present on the scene, orders them to disguise their act as a crime of burglary, but Luther flees with some valuable objects as well as the precious letter opener with Richmond's prints, after having sowed the bodyguards came to pursue him.In charge of the investigation, police lieutenant Seth Frank suspects Luther of the burglary, but not of the murder because Luther has never killed, which earns him Frank's esteem. While Luther prepares to flee abroad, he decides to stay in order to confound those really responsible himself after having watched, disgusted, a press conference of Richmond feigning grief to Sullivan. He goes on a date with Kate - arranged by Frank - who discovered that her father never stopped loving her and being interested in her career, while watching over her from afar. But Colin and McCarthy, a hitman hired by Sullivan, are both there armed with a sniper rifle. Luther and Kate are shot but escape the bullets.
