Description: This is former New York Times Moscow bureau chief Hedrick Smith's 1990 follow-up to his well-received 1976 book, The Russians. Smith, a Pulitzer Prize winner for his work with Neil Sheehan on the Pentagon Papers, has had 5 bestsellers, including his best-known work, The Power Brokers, How Washington Works based on his years as Washington bureau chief. The New Russians was originally written in the tumultuous years of 1989-90, as the Cold War ended, Europe's boundaries were redrawn, Germany reunified, and the Warsaw Pact disbanded -- leaving the the Soviet Union, and the West, charting a new, even hopeful future. This volume was published in 1990, at the time of Soviet cooperation with the US and the West in dealing with Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, and the successful settlement in Europe. However, within a year, a coup would be launched against Gorbachev, Yeltsin would help lead in stopping the effort to remove Gorbachev, but would also lead the push to dissolve the Soviet Union. By the end of 1991, the Soviet Union was gone. Smith would quickly update his book into a 1991 second edition, to reflect some of these events. This copy is a first edition of the original 1990 book, signed by Smith. It is in like new condition (see photos), with intact, unclipped dust jacket in great condition. Pages are fresh and unmarked. This is an unread copy (we had a "reading copy"), and has been in climate controlled storage for several years.
