Description: The Mediterranean and Middle East Volume 3, by Major-General I.S.O. Playfair, CD, DSO, MC. 1960, HMSO. Part of the official UK History of the Second World War. 482 pages, 40 maps and diagrams including many foldouts, 11 appendices. Covers Operation Crusader, Gazala, Mersa Matruh, and the first Battle of Alamein. It also chronicles naval and air action from summer 1941 through late summer 1942.This is a very impressive volume. It is beautifully printed on quality paper and includes detailed, carefully printed fold-out maps, photographs, and appendices with statistics and specifications. This copy is in very good condition with two provisos: A photograph in the frontispiece is detached but still present. The gutters of the first few and last few pages (all outside the main text block) are wrinkled, possibly because of a problem during production. (It must have been a challenging book to print and bind because of the tipped-in maps.) Please see the listing pictures for a closer look.Aside from these issues, the book is tight and in great shape. The text pages are unmarked and undamaged. The maps are all present and in excellent condition. The aqua-colored linen boards are clean and the gold lettering is shiny. The dust jacket has minor chipping and shelf wear to the top edge. A bookplate attached to the inside front cover marks this as part of the library of U.S. General A.C. Wedemeyer. This would be a great addition to any serious collection of Second World War books,
