The centerpiece of the Fair, held in Jackson Park, was a large water pool representing the voyage that Columbus took to the New World. Chicago won the right to host the fair over several competing cities, including New York City, Washington, D.C., and St. Louis. The exposition was an influential social and cultural event and had a profound effect on American architecture, the arts, American industrial optimism, and Chicago's image. This is a souvenir book of all 1893 Chicago exhibits, however the last 80 pages or so is devoted to St Louis points of interest! As a family souvenir, the children had access to the book as well as adults. They were taught to handle the book carefully or the corners wouldn't be so square and more of the illustrations would have been removed, but there are child writings on illustrations and some pages torn out from the beginning of the book. Hardcover has blue cloth boards with black & gold designs & lettering, gilt page-edges, but no dust jacket. Exterior has child's ink scrawl on rear cover and patina of a book over 130 years old. Front pages up to title page torn out. Binding is tight and appears complete. Interior has been handled with soiled hands with occasional stray pencil marks and child crayon markings throughout. No ownership markings or comments written in text. Cover ties book to 1893 date of fair. Title page dates book to 1892, which is more likely date of publication. Published by The Pacific Publishing Company of St. Louis, MO. Likely 1st & only edition, printing not stated. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Thanks for looking!
