This is the Jonathan Cape first edition with a dust jacket designed by Pat Marriott (which seems to be quite rare). There was a Book Society edition following very soon after this first issue. While the dust jacket does refer on its inner fold to the book being a Book Society Choice, the publication details on title and copyright pages in this example have no reference to the Book Society. Pre-owned hardback book with dust jacket. Jacket and book are in very good condition. Pictorial jacket is rubbed and has a little edge wear - very light creasing, small scuff at the spine head, nick at the rear bottom edge - but is in a very good state. Not price-clipped. Green cloth boards, with silver titling to spine. Boards too are very good, though there is a small mark on the spine and small bump on the rear board, a little crumple to the spine head. Some staining to top edge. Some spotting and differential toning to end papers. There are some regular light horizontal indentations at the free rear end paper. I am unclear what has caused this, but they are not evident beyond the end papers. Some spotting and age-related staining to front and rear matter but the internal contents look good and clean and the binding is still solid. pp. 284, book measures approx. 7 1/2 x 5 ins.
