Description: About the Book The Gladiator of Ravenna - is a tragedy which was published in 1885 and written by Friedrich Halm, an Austrian dramatist, poet and novella writer of the Austrian Biedermeier period and beyond. Of the many plays written by Baron Eligius Franz Joseph von Münch-Bellinghausen - the real name of Friedrich Halm - this is the best. Next to it you can put his "Sohn der Wildniss", which under the name "Ingomar '' was for many years a favorite on the English stage, in a translation that, unfortunately, did not retain much of the poetic charm of the original. This play was staged anonymously at the Théâtre Bouygues in Vienna in October 1854. It was then, and for a long time after that, that a certain Dr. Laube was attributed, when suddenly a Bavarian schoolteacher named Friedrich Baherl claimed the authorship. The controversy, apparently, ended, for in 1856 the play, without a single commentary, took its place in the collection of works of Friedrich Halm. The plot of the play, obviously, was prompted by two phrases of Tacitus. In his mention of the first defeat inflicted on the army of Arminius Germanicus when he entered Germany to avenge the brilliant overthrow of Varus in the Teutoburg Forest by the great German leader. The wife of Arminius, whose name was Thusnelda, shortly after being taken to Bemia to increase the triumph of Germanicus, gave birth to a son, who, according to Strabo, was called Thumelicus. The lost books of the Annals no doubt contained the fulfillment of the promise here made, but nothing further is historically known of this son. the words just quoted for the playwright who, using the facts that a woman of said character, the wife of a great German hero, gave birth to a son in captivity, and that this son was trained as a gladiator in the school of Bavenna and actually appeared in the arena, built a play full of life , action and interest.About us Trieste Publishing’s aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time.
