The ship of fools pushes on, however, and within sight of Thornton and Buck, crashes through the ice and in a matter of heartbeats is entombed forever in a frozen, watery grave Thornton and Buck return to Dawson, where Buck repays Thornton by saving his life in a bar - room brawl. Then, as a last hope to raise money for the expedition to the Lost Cabin. Thornton stakes everything he has on a bet that Buck can pull a 1000 pound sled 100 yards.
