(1830-1896) IN THE TATE GALLERY, LONDON The genesis of this picture is interesting. When designing his beautiful house at St. John's Wood, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema introduced, in the inner hail, a screen composed of long narrow panels, in which he invited his special artist friends to paint characteristic decorative pictures. Lord Leighton filled the space allotted to him with a sketch of Psyche at her bath, in which the beautiful figure was reflected at full length in the water. The design so pleased him that he repeated it on a large scale, with the omission of the greater part of the reflection, in the picture which was secured by the Chantrey Trustees for the nation. It is a work which is entirely characteristic of the artist's methods: refined in colour, academic in design and treatment, and bearing evidence of the careful deliberation given to every detail, before the picture was placed on the canvas. " There is my next picture," Leighton once said to a friend, pointing to a drawerful of chalk and brown paper studies. Before any work was done on the canvas, studies were made, in this way, of the figure, first in the nude, then with drapery ; every twist and fold of the drapery was treated in the same manner. Oftentimes little wax models of the figures were modelled, on which miniature draperies were arranged. Nothing was left to chance—all was carefully planned and studied. When, therefore, the time came to paint the actual picture, everything was settled in the artist's mind, and it was seldom the composition was altered in any material respect when once it was laid down on the canvas. Thackeray once indulged in prophecy: he wrote from Italy to Millais in the 'fifties: "I have met in Rome a versatile young dog who will run you hard for the Presidentship one day." The "versatile young dog" was Leighton, and the prophecy was duly fulfilled, though the prophet himself was long since dead. Leighton and Millais were the only two in the running when a successor had to be chosen to Sir Francis Grant ; but Millais gracefully stood aside, so great was the admiration for his friend. The " Bath of Psyche" was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1890, and purchased under the Chantrey Bequest for £1,050.
