The post and base are no longer mounted--so the piece comes apart. I have a simple piece of tape maintaining the connectivity. The glass inside is intact. A very scarce, nice antique.In the 19th century, the wealthy embarked on travels to the European Continent, known as the Grand Tour. The trip was meant to round out one’s education, with an emphasis on Classical arts and architecture, languages, history, literature, and philosophy. Grand Tourists bought souvenir buildings or ruins in bronze, alabaster, and marble – “object d’art” created by Italian craftspeople – as keepsakes. These souvenirs celebrate the Classical world, while also referencing the cultural phenomenon that was the Grand Tour. This item is from an estate in Kent, Connecticut. The family settled her in the 1700's.
