Pages are otherwise crisp and clean first edition 1998 The Tallulah Falls Railroad, connecting Cornelia, Georgia and Franklin, North Carolina, was completed in 1882. The railroad crossed 42 massive wooden trestles during the 58-mile journey between Cornelia and Franklin...the shortest being about 25 feet in length and the longest stretching 940 feet. In 1955, Walt Disney selected the railway as the location of principal photography for his Civil War movie, The Great Locomotive Chase. Disney expressed an interest in purchasing the railroad for use as an excursion line, but its Southern Railway management refused to sell, citing the railroad's accumulated debt of $300,000. On March 10, 1961, the Tallulah Falls Railroad was ordered to be sold as scrap. The purpose of this book is to tell the story of the Tallulah Falls Railroad through its images. The book begins with a brief history of the line, but it's the more than 120 black & white photographs (dating from 1898 to 1961) and their descriptive captions that are the heart of this publication. These vintage photos include shots of line construction, locomotives and rolling stock, trestles, wrecks, stations and depots, employees, the making of the Disney movie, and scenes along the right-of-way This is a brand new book from inventory purchased from a closed train store.
