Ed graduated from medical school in 1962, from the University of Tennessee and was subsequently drafted into the U.S. Army Medical Corps and sent to Vietnam in 1966, where he served in a M.A.S.H. unit. Returning to the states in 1968, he resumed his practice in Gardena, California for ten more years. He relocated to Fresno in 1978, and opened up the Valley Industrial and Family Medical Group, where he practiced for almost 30 years. In 1999, he was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a recipient of the NFL Alumni Career Achievement Award.
