Description: SUPERMAN THE MAN of STEEL #1 JULY 1991 Superman Origin Stuff When Jor-el, the top scientist of the planet Krypton, realized that his world was doomed, he sent his baby son, Kal-El, off into space in a rocket ship. The ship traveled far from the red sun of the exploding planet Krypton, eventually landing on Earth. There, the baby was found by a kindly old couple, the Kents, who dubbed him Clark and raised him as their own son. Our world's yellow sun gave Clark incredible powers, eventually turning him into the legendary hero Superman. Siegel and Shuster's creation was already the headliner in Action Comics when this solo Superman series began. Running for over forty-five years, this title introduced readers to Mr. Mxyzptlk, Kryptonite, and some of the most delightfully gimmicky Superman stories of all time. The series concluded in 1986 when John Byrne began a reinvention of Superman in The Man of Steel Mini-Series. It later picked up again as Adventures of Superman. Years later, DC restarted the series at # 1, by reinventing the Superman character, altering his origin somewhat and scaling back his powers to a more comprehensible level. The issues that follow are remembered as DC classics. Here is an opportunity to own some affordable, Mid-High Grade copies of these early Superman "classics", with only the most minor of imperfections allowable in these non-CGC graded comics. Item Description Stuff 9.6 NEAR MINT+ (NM+): Nearly perfect with a minor additional virtue or virtues that raise it from Near Mint. Only subtle bindery or printing defects are allowed. No bindery tears are allowed, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/8" have been noted. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and a minimum of fading. One corner may be almost imperceptibly blunted, but still almost sharp and cut square. Almost imperceptible indentations are permissible, but no creases, bends, or color breaks. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Spine is tight and flat. Staples must be original, generally centered, with only the slightest discoloration. Paper is (no worse than) off-white, supple and fresh. Only the slightest interior tears are allowed. Side note on CGC "Wizard First" 9.5 Near Mint labels: For a short time back around 2004, Wizard magazine teamed up with CGC to submit small numbers of new comics directly from the printer and delivered to CGC, and they had a special label, and Wizard came up with the 9.5 grade (their only other grades were 9.0 and 10.0).
