Description: SUPERB & Rare French Silver Mounted 18thC Neapolitan PIQUE Work Box, Paris, c1800 This incredibly rare box packs so much into its size it is remarkable. The body is beautifully inlaid with gold and silver wire in exquisite detail around a central inset mother-of-peal panel finely engraved with a castle scene. The body I believe to date to circa 1730 and made in Southern Italy - most likely Naples - famous for this type of work during this period. Large examples can be found in leading global auction house and making tens of thousands of pounds. In this instance the body of the box made its way to France around 1800 (the standard marks indicate a date of 1798-1809) where it was mounted in silver and made into a box. The lid is later engraved with the letter ‘L’. Unfortunately I have not been able to find the French makers mark but I have images for someone more knowledgable to decipher. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire an incredible piece of Neapolitan Pique at a fraction of the normal price. A truly wonderful box for the collector.
