Sue Grafton was born in 1940 in Louisville, Kentucky and she died in 2017 in Santa Barbara, California. She attended Atherton High School. She attended the University of Louisville for one year, then attended Kentucky State Teachers College (now Western Kentucky University) for two years, and then went back to the University of Louisville where she graduated in 1961 with a degree in English Literature with minors in Humanities and Fine Arts. Grafton’s father was enamored of detective fiction and wrote at night. He taught Grafton lessons on the writing and editing process and groomed her to be a writer. She began writing when she was 18 and finished her first novel four years later. She continued writing and complete six more novels. Only two of those novels were published (KEZIAH DANE and THE LOLLY-MADONNA WAR). She then spent the next 15 years writings screenplays for television movies, including Sex and the Single Girl; Mark, I Love You, and Nurse. She had always been fascinated my mysteries series whose titles were related, such as John D. MacDonald’s Travis McGee series, each of which included a color in the title, and Harry Kemelman’s Rabbi Small series, each of which included a day of the week in the title. She decided to write a series of novels that would follow the alphabet featuring Kinsey Millhone, which were set in Santa Teresa, a fictionalized version of Santa Barbara. Sue Grafton is the author of such great and famous books as KEZIAH DANE, THE LOLLY-MADONNA WAR, “A” IS FOR ALPHABET, “B” IS FOR BURGLAR, “C” IS FOR CORPSE, “D” IS FOR DEADBEAT, “E” IS FOR EVIDENCE (offered here), and, of course, the rest of the Kinsey Millhone novels ending with “Y” IS FOR YESTERDAY. Clearly Sue Grafton was (and remains) one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible mystery/detective writers of all time. From the dust jacket: “ . . . “E” IS FOR EVIDENCE . . . It was the silly season and a Monday at that, and Kinsey Millhone was bogged down in a preliminary report on a fire claim. Something was nagging at her, but she couldn’t pin it. The last thing she needed in the morning mail was a letter from her bank recording an erroneous $5,000.00 deposit in her account. Kinsey had never believed in Santa Claus and she wasn’t about to change her mind now. Resigning herself to a morning of frustration, she phoned the bank and, assaulted by canned carols, waited on hold for an officer to clear up the snafu . . . It was with something less than Christmas cheer that Kinsey faced off only minutes later with California Fidelity’s Mac Voorhies. Voorhies was smart, humorless, stingy with praise, and totally fair. He was frowning now . . . ‘I got a phone call this morning,’ he said, his frown deepening. ‘Somebody says you’re on the take.’ . . . Suddenly the $5,000.00 deposit clicked into place. It wasn’t a mistake. It was a setup . . . “E” is for evidence: evidence planted, evidence lost. “E” is for ex-lovers and evasions, enemies and endings. For Kinsey, “E” is for everything she stands to lose if she can’t exonerate herself: her license, her livelihood, her good name. And so she takes on a new client: namely, Kinsey Millhone, thirty-two and twice-divorced, ex-cop and wisecracking loner, a California private investigator with a penchant for lost cause -- one of which, it is to be hoped is not herself . . . As Kinsey begins to unravel the frame-up she finds that her future is intimately tied to one family’s past and to the explosive secret is has protected for almost twenty years. Digging deeper, she discovers that probing the past can have lethal consequences as she follows a trail of murder that leads to her own front door. And in what may well be her most challenging case, Kinsey comes up against the fact that sometimes, “E” is forever . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “A” IS FOR ALIBI “Smart, well-paced, and very funny.” -- Newsweek “B” IS FOR BURGLAR “Millhone made a vibrant debut in “A” IS FOR ALIBI and this one is just as good.” Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times “C” IS FOR CORPSE “The writing is as good as the literary tradition behind it.” -- Patricia Holt, San Francisco Chronicle “D” IS FOR DEADBEAT “Grafton’s no-bull private eye proves a credit to the alphabet in “D” IS FOR DEADBEAT, a mystery that deserves another ‘D’ -- for Damned Good . . . Grafton tells a dandy story.” -- Marilyn Stasio, Cleveland Plain Dealer From the rear panel of the dust jacket: “Sue Grafton, who has won the Anthony Award for each of her last two Kinsey Millhone books, lives in southern California, where she is hard at work on “F” IS FOR FUGITIVE.” ________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in full. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black quarter-cloth and gray boards binding with silver lettering on the spine. This may be an unread copy of this book. There is no writing in the book (except for Sue Grafton’s autograph on the title page), no bookplates, and no remainder marks (important in that this book shows up with a remainder mark at times). The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $15.95. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. The great and famous dust jacket artwork is by Abby Kagan. This is a nice collector’s copy of this scarce book. The book and dust jacket have virtually no flaws. This is the nicest 1st edition copy of “E” IS FOR EVIDENCE that I’ve handled in the last several years. It is definitely a collector’s copy. I use the EBAY shipping system to send out the majority of the books that I sell. Insurance is included in the shipping charges for this book that the buyer will be paying. One would assume that the buyer would want to insure this book for its correct value. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN MYSTERY/DETECTIVE 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-WINNING MYSTERY/DETECTIVE 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF SUE GRAFTON 1st EDITIONS (ESPECIALLY THE KINSEY MILLHONE SERIES)! __________________________________________________________________________________________________
Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to "give" these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. __________________________________________________________________________ I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. _____________________________________________________________________________
