STORIES OF CHINESE CHILDREN'S HATS: SYMBOLISM AND FOLKLORE (1996, SOFTCOVER)

Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE The birth of a child is a happy event for families. Parents protect the newborn with proper clothing. The Chinese tradition is to cover the newborn from head to toe so the baby does not get sick. The Chinese consider the head a very important part of the human body. The head must be well protected. Oftentimes, head-wear was necessary attire in everyday life. Where there was Chinese history, there were hats. Originally, hats were for protecting one's head from cold, heat, and wind. Later, head-wear became a fashion, with a variety of styles. Some children's hats look just like those of adults. However, most of them were especially designed and decorated for sheer enjoyment. Chinese mothers were very innovative. They had a lot of fun in making hats for their children. They made hats in shapes of tigers, boats, birds, etc. They stitched different floral or animal motifs on the hats. Mothers did not choose these shapes or patterns at random. Different shapes and patterns had different meanings. Quite often when a mother put a hat on her 3 year-old son, she may have simultaneously told the toddler the story of his hat. For example, the mother may have said, "If you wear this dragon hat, you will grow up with magic power." On another occasion, the mother may have pointed at the hat and said "Let me tell you the story of these Eight Immortals. They lived forever!" Story-telling enhances mother-child communication. More often than not, mothers choose stories they had once heard from their mothers. Whether fiction or a true event, the centuries-old stories mothers shared with their children were a social heritage in themselves. Children enjoyed both the hats their mothers made for them and the tales and fables their mothers told them. Hats became symbols of mothers' wishes and moral teaching for children. Mothers tried to make the hats as attractive and colorful as possible. They often applied the art of embroidery. ABOUT USWe are a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
