Robert Louis Stevenson: Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - London: Longmans, Green, and Company, 1886, first British edition, first issue, in the original paper wraps. Here's a nice copy of this famous literary cornerstone. The first printing was either witheld or delayed (accounts vary) by Longmans, from December 1885 to January 1886. To avoid reprinting the two-color covers on the paper wraps copies, Longmans staff simply hand-corrected the date (from "1885" to "1886") on the front cover. Most of these fragile paperbound copies apparently either perished or were rebound in hardback many years ago. This copy comes with a nice quarter-leather slipcase. The leather used to be dark green but has now returned to its original cow color. Condition: The front and rear wrappers (i.e., covers) are the originals. The spine is a replacement (a very professional job, done long before I owned it). The front wrapper has an ink signature at the top, some light soiling and a few tiny spots of foxing, and light edge wear. The rear wrapper is in slightly nicer condition. The front wrapper and half-title page have separated from the spine for about an inch and a half at the bottom. Page 121/122 is missing a small corner piece at the bottom. The pages are clean. It's probably worth pointing out that the original spines on these paper wraps copies were also blank, so you're not missing any lettering. PACKING: Books: I ship books in boxes, with plenty of padding. Pulps: I bag all pulps and include a backer board. For shipping, I’ll sandwich the bagged pulp between oversized pieces of cardboard and ship in either an envelope or a box, depending on the number of pulps and/or the total value. Combinations: I’ll figure it out. REFUNDS: I’ve been collecting for more than 50 years now and many of you know me, so I doubt you’ll be disappointed. I check every page of every item before listing. You won’t be surprised by missing pages, big stains, clipped coupons, the wrong back cover, etc. However, if the item has significant defects not noted in the description, you may return it for a refund of your original cost.
