To get a 'double spiral' this ring was made from a 7 7/8" ice tea spoon. Brief History of Alvin Manufacturing Co. Alvin has been in business since 1886 and is based in Providence, Rhode Island. They are currently a sub-division of Gorham. The company, founded by William H. Jamouneau, began in 1886 as Alvin Mfg. Co. With the addition of partners in 1893, the name was changed to Alvin-Beiderhase Co. In 1897 the company was acquired by Joseph Fahys & Co. The name was changed to the Alvin Silver Co. in 1919. When it was acquired by Gorham in 1928, the company underwent its last name change to Alvin Corporation. The History of Spoon Rings Spoon rings are believed to have originated in England in the 1600's. The story is that servants that couldn't afford a 'real' wedding ring would steal a silver spoon from their master and have it crafted into a ring. For a poor person a stolen spoon was to best, and easiest, way to give the woman they loved a beautiful ring. As the practice spread more and more silverware 'went missing' but since spoons were usually monogrammed, and newlyweds on staff were known to all, it wasn't hard to find the culprit and what was left of the spoon. Criminal records allowed historians to determine when spoon rings began. By the 19th century Spoon Ring popularity waned but then it took off again during the 60's and 70's.
