STATED FIRST EDITION Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Description: George Smiley is assigned to uncover the identity of the double agent operating in the highest levels of British Intelligence.Condition info: Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1974. Stated first edition. The book has been graded "near fine", the defect being a silver dollar-size, bleach-like white spot on the top page block near the spine, leaving the balance of the red stain color but causing bleeding along the top edge of all pages. The bleeding starts out at the front fly leaf at a 1/32" depth through the rear fly leaf where it is again at a depth of 1/16". The intervening leaves have the bleeding at no more than 1/4" in depth, 1 3/4" in length in each direction from the gutters. There is an owners' inked signature at the top of the front fly leaf. Otherwise the book is in very nice shape. The jacket is G+, the defects being a "V" shaped, 1/2" tear at the upper left-hand corner of the jacket's fore-spine hinge, the jacket's spine ends are chipped, more so the spine head. There is a 1/8" x 1/8", tinsel-like mark about 1 3/4" up from the jacket's spine heel just off-center of the spine. Of note is the absence of the $7.95 price on the front flap and the "6/74" date on the rear flap, although the title page reverse states the book to be a first edition but there is no indication that the printing is anything but a first printing of the first edition. Certain clusters of pages are cut slightly shorter than the rest of the book, a phenomenon I have observed in other first and early printings. Although the price and date are missing from the intact jacket flaps, there is no indication that the book was issued as a mass marketed, Book-of-the-Month- Club, etc. item. It's a mystery best left to someone familiar with the points of this splendid novel.
