Description: Child's Marine Blue Green Transferware Tea Set Waste Bowl LITTLE MAE WITH PETS Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c 1890 This antique children's transferware toy waste bowl or dregs pot dates to 1890. The round cup shaped bowl stands 2-1/2 inches tall and measures 4 inches across the top rim. The bowl was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern designs captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. Originally part of a complete miniature teaset, the waste bowl is the piece that is nearly always missing from the original sets. The color is a rich blue green teal. The bowl depicts young Little Mae sitting on a stoop in a doorway with a kitten on her lap, a cat drinking milk from a bowl, a dog sitting beside her and a bird looking on from overhead. This endearing scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies and a little boy hidden on the cup. The rims are decorated with a criss-cross border and fruit trim. This set makes a wonderful addition for a fanciful collection. Mady by the Staffordshire pottery maker Charles Allerton in the last quarter of the 19th century. The bowl is marked "Staffordshire England". The bowl is in great condition with old stilt marks on the foot, original to the making, and no other chips cracks or repairs. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect these dishes...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not always aligned neatly, and there are always little bumps and dips that were glazed over in the factory and runny smeary glaze. The primitive and hasty style adds to the folksy charm of 19th century childrens' pottery.Sold as is. Children's gree aesthetic transferware is hard to find and highly sought after, especially in this whimsical pattern. This versatile little bowl will make a stunning collection, or add them to any existing collection of toys and children's ware. Little Mae patterns were made for the American market and are as popular today as they were when they were first sold.
