Description: Staffordshire Cobalt Blue Transfer Printed Ironstone Childs Toy Doll Dinner Set Platter MAIDEN HAIR FERN Ridgways Stoke-on-Trent Staffordshire, England c.1885 This is a scarce miniature toy platter circa 1885, originally part of a complete dollhouse dinner service. The color is a rich brilliant cobalt blue sometimes called flow blue. The 7 inch long ironstone tray is abundantly decorated with beautiful Maiden Hair Fern, a fine example of the Victorian love of nature. It was made by Ridgway, a pottery in Stoke-on-Trent in the Staffordshire region of England. The registration mark dates the pattern to 1885. The platter is in great condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it. Not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not aligned neatly, there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge frits original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm just right for children and dolls play. Richly detailed, with clear and crisp transfers, it is just amazing that this little dinner set tray belonged to a child and her doll well over 100 years ago! Sold as is. Miniature toy transferware of this quality is quite a find and highly sought after. The dark blue transfer is earthy and striking, making a stunning complement to any collection of aesthetic transferware or any early children’s wares, and the pattern makes splendid gift for the botanist in your life or use it for dollhouse play! A very sturdy piece ready to entertain future generations of children and their dolls. We have also listed other early toy table and tea wares. Mix and match for a lovely display!
