At 29, he was ordained a priest and five years later founded the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Named Bishop in 1837, he motivated his personal life and those of his fellow Oblates with the scriptural motto: "He sent me to preach the Gospel to the poor." On Mission Sunday, October 19, 1975, the Holy Father, Pope Paul VI, declared him "Blessed." This medal was blessed by Fr. Edwin J. Guild on the occasion of his 40th Jubille Mass.
