Description: I was fortunate enough to come across these at an auction. I’m finally ready to part with them. THIS LISTING IS FOR ONE SET, including ONE fork, ONE knife and ONE spoon. They are from St. Elizabeth Hospital for the Insane. It was a U.S GOVT hospital for soldiers during the Civil War. Lincoln was a frequent visitor and has his own room for his visits. It had its share of famous and infamous residents: “Well-known patients of St. Elizabeths have included would-be presidential assassins Richard Lawrence, who attempted to kill Andrew Jackson, and John Hinckley Jr., who shot Ronald Reagan. Hinckley was released in 2016, subject to a number of restrictions. The court lifted all restrictions in 2022. Charles J. Guiteau, who assassinated President James Garfield, was held here until he was executed.” The following information is from the following website: https://www.nps.gov/places/st-elizabeths-hospital.htm St. Elizabeths Hospital, formerly known as the Government Hospital for the Insane, was the first federally-funded mental hospital in the country. Dorothea Dix, a prominent 19th-century social reformer and advocate for mental health, lobbied for a public facility to care for mentally ill military personnel and local Washington, DC, residents. In 1852, Congress established the Government Hospital for the Insane on 350-acres overlooking the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington. It would become an international model for psychiatric hospital design and a prominent center for mental health research during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With it’s fascinating history, these pieces have been a privilege to own ❤️ I am including links to online articles and information about the Hospital For The Insane: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Elizabeths_Hospital#Notable_resident_patients https://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2010/summer/institutional.html https://www.civilwarmed.org/st-elizabeths-hospital/
