Description: SPECTACULAR NAVAJO TRADING POST RUG, HANDSPUN WOOL, EXCELLENT CONDITION, C1910 #0295 Seldom do these large, historic Trading Post rugs show up in the marketplace, especially in this great condition. The incredible eyedazzling serrated diamond designs with 4 prominent crosses are eye popping. This comes directly from the estate of Larry Martz (see bio below), reportedly purchased by him from Garland’s Navajo Rugs, Sedona, Arizona. Measures approximately 51” x 92”. For comparison, this is the equivalent of 3 Double Saddle blankets sized at 31” x 51”. Historic, circa1910. As good as it gets. Fresh to the marketplace. Larry Martz was President of the Overseas Press Club of America from 2000 to 2002, and served as co-chairman of its Freedom of the Press Committee. After graduation from Dartmouth College and a year at the University of Edinburgh on a Rotary Foundation Fellowship, Martz worked in daily journalism at The Pontiac (Michigan) Press, The Detroit News and The Wall Street Journal. He joined Newsweek in 1961 as a writer. His honors include the J.C. Penney/University of Missouri award for business writing and the Silver Gavel Award of the American Bar Association, and he was one of three Newsweek writers whose special report, “The Negro in America: What Must Be Done,” won the National Magazine Award in 1968 (a year when only one magazine was singled out for excellence). He served as national affairs editor through the Watergate scandal, overseeing 36 cover stories on the crisis culminating in the resignation and pardon of President Richard Nixon. As assistant managing editor he supervised most major sections of the magazine and took on several special assignments, including the supervision of Newsweek on Campus in its first year of publication. As editor of Newsweek International, Martz ran the three overseas editions of the magazine, which won three OPC awards during his tenure. Returning to the domestic magazine as an editor at large, he wrote cover stories on national affairs, business and the economy, and nternational affairs. Everything guaranteed as stated. IN an effort to assist Buyers with understanding the way I describe the condition of Navajo weavings that I’m selling on ebay, I spoke with Navajo textile author and expert Tyrone Campbell about his ‘Classification Categories for Condition’ that he first published in his NEWSLETTER in 1981. After discussing with him that we may have to tweak it a bit because its been 40 years since it was originally comprised and has gotten nearly impossible to find weavings in excellent, let alone mint condition these days, I concluded, what the hell, why mess with a good thing. It’s a standard worth sticking to! So here it is as originally written (and with permission to reprint from Tyrone, July 2020). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ “CLASSIFICATION CATEGORIES FOR DETERMINING PHYSICAL CONDITION FRAGMENT: Any portion of an entire weaving. DETERIORATED: Heavily damaged, warps exposed, selvage missing, large holes, serious fading or running, corners or areas missing. AVERAGE: Shows floor wear or small holes, some selvage damage, very minor bleeding, etc. GOOD: Above average classification may still show use, but not broken warps. In some cases a very small hole or two or a minor selvage break or two is acceptable. EXCELLENT: No holes, no bleeding or fading, no exposed warps or serious selvage damage. MINT: This classification means that the textile is in pristine condition. NOTE: In the case of rare weavings we will up-grade the condition classification from Average to Good or from Good to Excellent, but in no case to Mint or from Deteriorated to Average condition.” From THE TYRONE D.
